My Beginning

Hi,

My name is Jennifer and I want to share with you the story of how I got to where I am today. I hope that in doing so I am able to motivate other young girls to never give up and follow their dream.

When I was in high school I joined the business and finance academy. My main reason for joining at the time was because my friend was going to join and I thought it would be cool to have multiple classes together. Going on field trips with the academy didn’t hurt either.

When it was finally time to join the business academy, there were some issues. Apparently I was not able to join because I had honors and AP classes. I was really upset that me and my friends weren’t going to be together, so I went to talk to the advisor. She told me I had get out of my honors and AP classes if I wanted join.  I was hesitant at first, but I eventually did it.

My first day in the academy I was so extremely nervous because I came in late and I only knew my one friend. The class I went into, had assigned seat so I couldn’t even sit with my friend. Little did I know, that was one of the best things for me. Sitting away from the one person I knew, forced me into talking to the people around me and making friends with them. After a while, I became friends with pretty much everyone. I loved the academy and the people in it.

The following year, I decided to run for club president because of how much I enjoyed being in the academy with such great people. Becoming president of the academy is when my entire life shifted. It was the beginning of some great opportunities for me. Not only was I now able to write “president” on my resume but I got such great work experience. I stated planning event and fundraisers. I developed a great relationship with everyone in the academy and gained better speaking and leadership skills.

So many great things came from being in the academy and one of them was having a good relationship with my academy advisor. Not only did she write me letters of recommendation but she started my career. She gave me some advice and the email of an attorney who spoke to her class. With that, I scheduled a meeting to speak with him and hopefully get advice about how to become an attorney since that is what I had always wanted to do.

At the end of my meeting with him, I asked if there were any internship opportunities available. I was lucky enough to get a yes in response. Right after, I emailed my academy advisor and set everything up to start my internship.

My internship was only the first great thing to come from the academy. When my senior year came along, I was appointed CEO of our class business. It was such a great opportunity, I went to many competitions and gained so much experience with creating business plans.

About half way through the year, a women spoke to our class about another academy that was just starting up through the chamber of commerce. She talked about the opportunity to actually start your own business, meet professionals, and go to competitions, so of course I was interested.

After applying to the Young Entrepreneur’s Academy through my chamber of commerce, I had an interview. Following the interview, I received a call notifying me of my acceptance in the program that soon after change my life for the better.

Through the Young Entrepreneur’s Academy, I created my own business. Soon after I became a semifinalist for the YEA! Saunders completion and traveled from California to Arizona for a weekend. Although the events of that weekend were held all over Arizona, the completion itself was at the ASU Skysong center.

At the time I did not know that the Skysong center was not actually ASU, but it didn’t matter to me, I fell in love with the place. Attending the Saunders completion in Arizona, soon became a major factor in me attending Arizona State University.

Not only did my academy help me find my future at ASU, but it gave so many great opportunities to meet important people and speak in front of even more important people. I was asked if I could just say a few words about my academy experience for a linked learning conference, but I definitely said more than a few word. I was so blessed to be a part of such an amazing academy with limitless opportunities that of course I had express my gratitude and appreciation for linked learning. Following my speech, I had many important people wanting to speak to me and I had the privilege to attend a chamber of commerce meeting. I was also mentioned in the chamber of commerce newsletter and a tri county area article about linked learning.

My academy was what sparked my future, so I encourage everyone to find their passion and not let anything get in the way. There are so many great opportunities out there, you just need to find them. For those of you that don’t have a motivation, let me be the one to tell you that you are amazing, you can do anything you set your mind to, follow your dreams and you will get to where you want to be.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope I was able to make even the slightest difference in your life.

With the kindest regards,

Jennifer

Life at Arizona State

If I’m going to be completely honestly, then I’ll tell you that ASU was not my first choice for college. It was actually my very last choice when I felt that I had no other option but to go to ASU or community college. I grew up with the notion that going to a university right after high school was a must so there was no way I was going to choose community college. Now I see that community college was not a bad option, but I chose ASU. I chose a school I new nothing about and had never even been to. I chose a school that was a complete state away from my family, friends, and boyfriend.
Contrary to popular belief, attending Arizona State University was the best decision I have ever made. Why you ask? Well because of the opportunities and the community.

For me, going to college was liberating and I finally had the freedom I always wanted, but it wasn’t about the freedom to drink or go to parties. I was one of the few who didn’t care much for parties or drinking. I was excited to make my own decisions and being responsible for getting my life on the right path to success.

ASU was full of so many brilliant people in each class. I was in awe of the knowledge these people had and I was able to be friends with these people.

Living in a residential community was great. I lived on the same hall as the next Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Kate Spade, and even the next Michael Phelps.

Speaking of Michael Phelps, involvement on campus was incredible! There are so many options to choose from. There’s an organization for almost anything and everyone is welcomed to join everything. Once you choose an organization there so many leadership options available.

Not only was there leadership positions but there hundreds upon hundreds of job opportunities. You could work fast food on campus or work an office job on campus. There were also so many near by job opportunities off campus. ASU could help you get the internship or job of your dreams. ASU had so many resources for students. You have a career coach, a success coach, your counselor, and so much more.

The entire ASU community is great. Professors are approachable, you have an instant connection with any ASU student/ alumni. Being a student at Arizona State is such a special thing that only ASU students can understand.

There are so many reasons why I love ASU but I know for sure that Arizona State was the right school for me and I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else.
